Anything can happen in match play—both inside and outside the ropes

Tiger Woods’ 9&8 evisceration of Stephen Ames in the 2006 WGC-Match Play Championship has become part of golf’s lexicon, synonymous with taking someone to the woodshed. But Woods has also been on the receiving end of some wild match-play moments, losing to Peter O’Malley in 2002 and getting beat—twice!—by Nick O’Hern (2005, 2007). It all proves a golf truism that was born before Tiger and will live long after: Anything can happen in match play. Which is why some fans, like this one from the 1999 World Match Play Championship held at London’s Wentworth Golf Club, dress for the ridiculousness they are expecting.
